  • How did you get involved in karting/motorsports?

My parents and none of my family have really been involved in karting or motorsports, we’ve usually been a hockey family, but I got invited to a karting birthday party at Mosport in

Bowmanvill, Ontario, and from there on I kinda liked it and we started doing the drive and drive series at gosport. From there it just grew, Briggs, then Rotax.

  • How long have you been involved in the sport?

Three and a half years!

  • What's your most memorable moment from your racing career?

Probably Rotax Max Grand finals 2016. Going there into that race, into qualifying, I didn't really expect to do as well as I did, to get Pole. That was probably the most memorable moment, to show that I’m actually a decent driver. Heat racing came, I won the first heat race, finished around 7th in the second heat race in the rain, and then 2nd in the last heat race. Then in the prefixal I started 2nd, I slotted into 5th on the start, and it started pouring rain. The track was a little bit damp so there were some guys on rain tires.. I got clipped which bent my steering column.. the driver was disqualified after the fact, but I still didn't make it into the main which was really disappointing, but it happens. I’m qualified for Senior max for this year, through the U.S open in 2016, which was a one off race and gave a ticket for the following year.

  •  What is your favourite track?

Probably Sarno in Italy. That track is really legit, like it has every corner that you could want in a go kart track, fast slow, and its just a fun track and really smooth to drive on.

  •  Who has been your favourite driver to race against?

in Senior its been a whole different game for me, I’m racing in the Skusa Pro Tour, so theres a lot of good drivers, but I’d say consistently, my favourite driver to race against is Samuel Lupien, he’s a really good driver, he’s fast, he’s clean, and he’s a really good person to race against. He was my teammate at the grand finals, and he did better than me in the finals, but together we were a really good pair working together on the same team. He’s a great driver and a great guy, and I really just enjoy racing with him.

  • Is there anything you would change from your career?

Not really! Since we only started three years ago, we’ve done so many laps around the track just trying to get better. I don't think we’ve done any one thing wrong yet you could say. We’ve been really smooth, we’ve been on a constant upslope with our progress, honestly I think it’s been a really great run so far from us.

  • What car/ series would you most like to race in?

Next year I’d like to race F4, but to be honest I’d just like to race in any series. Maybe not Moto GP, although that would be awesome, but preferably F4, or usf2000, those cars are awesome! I really want go somewhere with my racing, and in those cars it seems very realistic. Likely by the end of this year I’ll be hopping in a car!

  • Who would you most like to race against, past or present?

This week i’m racing against Marco DiLeo! when I started karting, in Mini Max i was 12 years old, i was very little, and Marco was the Owner of Goodwood, he was the guy to beat, and I’ve always just looked up to him in that respect, and now I have the chance to race against him, and honestly i’m super exited! I’ve always wanted to race against him!.

  • Who is your racing idol, or the driver you most look up to/aspire to be like?

I’ve really looked dup to the Di Leos! i’m a big fan of them, but Dan Di leo! before karting I didn't really know anything about motorsports, I couldn't even name a driver or a car or anything like that, so when I heard about Dan Di Leo, he was amazing! he did so much with his career, and it was unfortunate that he couldn't go any further. One guy I really look up to now is Max Verstapen, he was only in karts like three years ago I think.

  • What advice would you give to the next generation of racers who are just getting into the sport?

Just Practice! do as many laps as you can. go to the track every opportunity you get! it’s all about seat time in racing! Whoever is most comfortable with the kart will be the best driver!

When I first met Ryan, he was a rookie minimax driver with a beak taped on to commemorate a bird he head butted to death at Mosport. Fast forward three years, and Ryan is now one of the top Sr karters in Canada, and he's just getting started. I sat down to talk to him for a bit during practice for round one of the Eastern Canadian Karting Championships at Goodwood Kartways.
